Neurosurgery Skills Training Facility was a dream of Prof. P. N. Tandon and Prof. A. K. Banerji. This facility had its beginning about four decades ago, as a Neurosurgery Experimental Laboratory for practicing microsurgical techniques on small laboratory animals. This laboratory was housed in a small room with one microscope as a part of Department of Neurosurgery, AIIMS.

Prof. V. S. Mehta was instrumental in the relocation of the Neurosurgery Experimental Laboratory in the Central Animal Facility; and Animal Ethics Committee permission for the trainee and trained neurosurgeons from India and Abroad in Micro-vascular and Micro-neural anastomosis.

Prof. A.K. Mahapatra was actively involved in the infrastructure expansion of the Neurosurgery Skills Training Facility (NSTF) with the support of DST-FIST Program, Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Indo-German Collaboration, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology and Department of Health Research (DHR-ICMR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He was actively involved in the initiation of Cadaver dissection in Neurosurgery training with Departments of Anatomy and Forensic Medicine; and in the development of Neuro-technology in collaboration with IIT Delhi.
